A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and execution of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We will meticulously determine what caused this accident,” stated the national leader.
The president confirmed that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The president noted plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the immediate past president, whose presidency ended the prior year. This venture was a hallmark of his leadership's economic vision for the southern region.
Another massive rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a significant expansion of its role in public infrastructure. They were executed at an rapid speed, surpassing predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently sparked ongoing apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an previous accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the disaster, the head of a major opposition party demanded an immediate halt in the building and running of all such projects.
This halt was proposed while awaiting a full technical review. The party stated that the situation "requires swift accountability."
In response, the president insisted that the train had been running in total accordance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these strategic projects.
