Individuals Stopping Anti-Obesity Jabs Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

New research suggests that patients who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who halt traditional lifestyle programs.

Research printed in a major health publication shows that while obese people often shed a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Users buying such drugs should be cognizant of the risk of fast weight regain when the therapy is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a return to starting mass in about one and a half years.

Comparing Therapies

The analysis, which examined dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Researchers point out that individuals who lose weight through dieting typically see a more gradual weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Doctors propose the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the heightened rebound.

These medications mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Issue?

Health authorities recommend the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals say that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy should be considered life-long.

This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "underscore the chronic nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Experiences

Users who have discontinued the medication describe a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"It was like a switch that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," said one woman.

This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Growing Use

Survey data indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire remaining high.

  • Adoption is greater among women than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success relies on integrated lifestyle changes.
